First step towards the Algerian network of botanists

As part of the third component of the IPAMed Project «Conserving wild plants and habitats for people in the South and East Mediterranean», a first consulting meeting aiming to create and define the organization of a national network of botanists in Algeria was organized on December 14th, 2016 at the General Direction of Forests (Direction Générale des Forêts). This meeting was held attended by two botany professors from the University of Sciences and Technology Houari Boumediene, namely Mme N. Yahi and Mme F. Abdoun.

A second meeting took place on December 19th, 2016 with botany Professor N. Benghanem from the Mouloud Mammeri University of Tizi-Ouzou, and others workshops were planned during the following weeks.

This series of meetings aimed to discuss the main objectives which would be assigned to this national network, giving it technical, educational and scientific dimensions.

The creation of this network will be hold by a core group of scientists and managers. This group will be in charge of defining the network’s main assignments, which will have to result in significant improvements of conservation actions targeting vulnerable and endangered plants species.

In addition to its main conservation duty, the network could initiate a state of the knowledge on Algerian flora and could enhance a new dynamic focused on the development of botany in Algeria.

For this purpose, 2017 will be dedicated to design and make operational the Web platform which will support the network running. It will also be devoted to the network’s territorial organization and the launching of the first educational and technical activities.
